Now that you are in Transylvania, it’s time to meet Prince Dracula, who has a hunter-palace in Turda and wants to invite you in his castle to experience the hunter-Prince’s hospitality. You will find yourself in a particularly fairy-tale world, because of the castle’s trophies and furnishing. After this visit the fantastic Salt Mine and the Torda Gorge which is an astonishing natural formation and has a beautiful legend.

Day by day descriptions

Arrival Day: accommodation In the hunter-Prince’s castle

Day 1. The Salt Mines of Turda

After a brief city tour we discover the grandiose natural phenomenon of the Salt Mines of Turda. Salt was first extracted here during the antiquity and the mine continuously produced from the Middle Ages till 1932. Today it houses a museum of the history of salt mining. Since 1992, the salt mines of Turda have operated as a speleotherapy center and a popular tourist attraction. A unique must-see!

Day 2. Hiking – The Gorge of Turda

Today we put on our boots and go out to explore the Gorge of Turda, which is a fantastic natural formation and has a beautiful legend. Come and listen! We will take a walk along the almost vertical rocks and discover mother nature’s beauty. The canyon, formed through the erosion of the Jurassic limestone is 2.900 m long. There are another 32 caves left here and some of them are rather large. More than 1000 plant- and animal species live here. I promise an unforgettable experience!

Day 3. Option 1st – Salty Lakes (You can select this option only for the summer weather)

The exploitation of salt over many centuries caused the apparition of numerous salty lakes in the area. The concentration of salt in these lakes varies. However, the raised level of salt and other elements provides therapeutic qualities of the water. Now they are used for therapeutic purpose or recreation. You have to take a bath in this rejuvenating healthy water or just take a swim for pleasure! The water is salty like that of the Death See, so you will float on the surface!

Day 3. Option 2nd – Old meets modern in Cluj-Napoca (You can select this option in wintertime or cold weather)

Cluj- Napoca was a fortified city since the 12th century. There is a pedestrian area near the city wall whose gates were fortified with defense towers. A walk through the central part of the city will make you familiar with both the old and new Cluj. After a delicious lunch in a pub called Bulgakov you may visit the St. Michael’s Cathedral, a remarkable historical monument built in 1316.  The square is dominated by the king Matthias Corvinus’s equestrian statue. Later in the afternoon enjoy a stroll in the city center with many cozy little restaurants, welcoming shops, beautiful old buildings and promenades.
